How to Care for Warped Antique Furniture

Antique wooden furniture may warp or split if it is not cared for properly. Once warping has occurred to wood furniture, it cannot be repaired without completely replacing the warped portion of the item. Unfortunately, replacing portions of antique furniture can be challenging and may lead to a loss in value, even when done well. You can continue to use furniture that has been slightly warped if you care for it properly to prevent additional damage from occurring.

Instructions

    • 1

Keep and store wooden furniture in areas with well-maintained humidity. Wood can warp if it is exposed to too much humidity or frequent humidity changes. Protect your wood furniture by alternately using a humidifier and dehumidifier to regulate and maintain the humidity in the rooms where the furniture is being kept or used.

    • 2

Avoid exposing your antique wooden furniture to moisture. This means keeping drink glasses, vases and other wet objects away from your wooden furniture. Limit mopping around the legs and bases of your antique furniture to limit moisture exposure.

    • 3

Keep antique wood furniture out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources or high temperatures.

    • 4

Only use cleaning products that are designed for safe use on wood. Cleaning products that are not safe for wood can lead to additional warping.
