Organizing Furniture for a Small Entry Way

A home's entryway or foyer gives guests a first impression of your home. If a foyer is cluttered, disorganized and inefficient, it implies that the rest of the house is the same. Conversely, a well-organized entryway is a delight. The type of furniture and its placement in a small foyer is determined by the purpose and size of the entryway. A small, decorative chair or bench to sit upon while slipping shoes on or off is functional and attractive. Coat racks, small tables, umbrella stands and petite chests are common entryway furniture pieces.

Instructions

    • 1

Place a small chair or bench along a wall of the entryway, allowing ample room for the front door to swing open. Avoid blocking walkways or interior doorways. Selecting a bench with storage space under the seat provides a hidden area for children to place backpacks, mittens, hats and scarves upon entering the house.

    • 2

Position a small table next to the bench or chair, providing a convenient place to set keys, wallets or purses when arriving home.

    • 3

Situate a free-standing coat rack on the other side of the bench or chair, if space permits, or place it in a corner of the entryway. Purchase a small, metal coat rack with an umbrella holder at the bottom and hat hooks encircling the top, providing additional functionality. The open, iron bars of the coat rack will give it a lighter look, making it ideal for using in a smaller foyer. Avoid heavy, wooden coat racks with protruding legs that take up a lot of space, creating a possible safety issue.
