Painting Cabinets to Look Like Distressed Wood

Modern day cabinets are usually installed with a glossy finish. However, sometimes a brand new finish does not fit with the look of a home, especially if you have a country home design or a lot of antique furniture. Instead of replacing them with genuinely aged cabinets, you can use paint to create a distressed finish. Distressing a cabinet does not take a lot of money or time to accomplish, and the end result can be well worth the effort.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the screws from the hinges of the cabinet and remove the doors.

    • 2

Remove all the hardware from the cabinet doors using a screwdriver.

    • 3

Wipe down the cabinets with a grease-removing cleaner using a clean cloth.

    • 4

Paint a base color coat on the cabinet using a two to three-inch wide paint brush. Brush the flat coat on the cabinet going with the grain. Let this flat coat dry for 24 hours.

    • 5

Apply a paste wax to the flat coat using a rag. Cover the entire cabinet if you wish to create a huge distressed area or smaller areas for an isolated distressed look.

    • 6

Apply a distressed wood glaze, available from most hardware or paint stores, on top of the wax. You can let some of the first flat color coat come through the glaze. Allow the glaze to dry for 24 hours.

    • 7

Sand the wood glaze with a 220 grit piece of sandpaper, moving up to 80 grit sandpaper to create different levels of distress along the wood. Wipe the surface of the cabinets with a clean rag.

    • 8

Rehang the cabinet doors and reinstall the hardware.
