Removing Wax From Wood Before Restaining

Before you can refinish your wood furniture with a new stain, remove old wax buildup with a mixture of turpentine and linseed oil. This solution also removes layers of grime and helps condition the wood. After you have removed the old wax buildup, you may also work additional linseed oil into the wood with a soft cloth. This helps polish the wood and restore a sheen to the surface.

Instructions

    • 1

Spread newspapers under the wood furniture or other item on which you wish to work. Do the work in a well-ventilated area.

    • 2

Pour 1 cup of gum turpentine into a large glass container that has a lid. Add 3 cups of boiled linseed oil to the container.

    • 3

Seal the container and shake it to mix the linseed oil and turpentine.

    • 4

Heat about a quart of water until it is just hot to the touch. Pour the water into a large, clean aluminum can. Place the can on a saucer.

    • 5

Pour a thin stream of the turpentine and linseed oil mixture onto the water until it just covers the water's surface. Do not mix them.

    • 6

Dampen a cloth with the floating mixture in the can. Wring out any excess moisture.

    • 7

Rub the mixture on the wood to remove the wax buildup, but avoid getting the joints of the furniture too damp, because this can affect the glue. Work on a small area at a time.

    • 8

Dampen another clean cloth with plain water. Use it to wipe each area after you work the mixture into the wood. Wipe the wood dry with a soft cloth.
