Buffing Wood Furniture

Buffing wood furniture is one of the last steps in the process of waxing and polishing the piece. Buffing distributes the wax evenly and gives it a glossy shine. You can use any clean, soft, lint-free cloth to buff a piece of furniture after you apply the wax. Softer buffing cloths will result in a higher gloss shine of the wax, so select the buffing material based on how glossy you want the piece to be. You can also buff between waxes to restore shine as it begins to fade from wear.

Instructions

Let the wax you applied dry for 10 minutes to one hour, or according to the package directions. If you are buffing to restore shine and not as part of the waxing process, wipe the piece with a paper towel to remove dust.

    • 2

Press the buffing cloth into the wood furniture and make a quick, circular scrubbing motion across the surface of the piece. This moves the cloth against the grain of the wood and distributes the wax evenly.

Continue moving the cloth across the piece in circular motions, with even pressure, until you have moved across the entire piece. Apply a second coat of wax, if you are in the process of waxing the piece, then repeat the buffing and let it dry according to the package directions.
