How to Drill a Blum Pattern for Hinges

Blum hinges have recessed cups, allowing the hinge body to collapse flush into the cup as the door on a piece of furniture is closed. While certainly a feature that enhances the fit and appearance of the finished piece, the holes required for this specialized hinge are also unique. Taking the time to drill the Blum pattern precisely makes installation of the hinge that much more accurate.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the hinge spacing on the back of the door. Transfer these measurements to the outer frame opening of the cabinet onto which the door will be mounted.

    • 2

Clamp the Blum guide to one of the measured drill locations. Note the three holes on the guide. Guides provide the proper hole spacing for the Blum hinges.

    • 3

Attach your 35 millimeter Forstner hole bit to the drill. Drill straight into the guide to the depth the bit allows.

    • 4

Drill out the smaller 2.8 millimeter dowel holes immediately above and below the larger 35 millimeter hole, following the guide. If your Blum hinges do not use dowels or pin guides, ignore the smaller holes.

    • 5

Move the guide to the other marked drilling point, and repeat the process.
