How to Get Rid of the Rubber Smell in Faux Leather Furniture

Faux leather can be more durable than natural leather, but it retains much of the same feel and look of leather. Some faux leather has a strong, rubbery smell when it is new. While this smell can naturally dissipate on its own, this process can take much longer than you may want to wait. You can deodorize the faux leather furniture on your own to hasten the process considerably.

Instructions

    • 1

Wash your faux leather furniture with a mixture of soap and water.

    • 2

Rinse the furniture with a damp cloth and dry the furniture completely. In some cases, this may be enough to remove the rubbery smell from your faux leather furniture. If not, you may need to do further deodorizing.

    • 3

Mix one part white vinegar with one part water in a spray bottle.

    • 4

Spray the vinegar and water solution onto the faux leather and allow it to sit for a few minutes. Vinegar is a natural deodorizer and although it has a strong smell on its own, that smell disappears as the vinegar evaporates.

    • 5

Wipe down the faux leather furniture with a damp cloth and smell the furniture carefully to see if the rubbery smell remains. If it does, repeat the vinegar spray until the furniture is deodorized.
