Remodeling & Antiquing a White Bathroom Vanity

Antique furniture never goes out of style, but can often come with an expensive price tag. An alternative to buying an expensive antique piece is to take a new piece and make it look old and rustic. One way to age furniture is to distress it. This process consists of intentionally denting and sanding the paint to create a worn and aged look. Distressing adds to the appeal of the piece and creates a unique antique look that will be enjoyed for years.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove knobs, handles, and any other hardware on the vanity. Remove the countertop and sink to keep them from being damaged.

    • 2

Hit the vanity with a light chain to create random, light dents throughout the piece.

    • 3

Sand the piece with sandpaper. Sand the paint layers down in areas where natural wear would occur, such as drawers and doors. The corners can be smoothed even more to achieve the look of long wear. Step back and look at the piece occasionally to see where more sanding is needed.

    • 4

Drive nails into the wood to simulate worm holes. Worm holes are generally close together so keep that in mind while doing this application.

    • 5

Stain the furniture to create an old antique look. Use an old paintbrush and lightly dip it in the stain. Press the brush to the vanity, and using long strokes, apply the stain. Immediately rub the stain using a soft cloth, to thin it out and make blotchy spots throughout the vanity. Allow the stain to dry thoroughly.

    • 6

Apply a coat of polyurethane to seal the finish. You may use a spray sealer or a brush-on sealer. If you're using the brush-on application, be sure to use a fresh clean paint brush before beginning.

    • 7

Attach new or used hardware that has a damaged or worn look. You can use hardware from old cabinets or purchase hardware manufactured with an antique look.

    • 8

      Replace the countertop and sink.
