How to Make Hall Trees From Old Doors

Create a decorative hall tree for your foyer or mud room using old doors that are often available at thrift stores and architectural salvage stores. You need not be a master craftsman to turn an old door into a hall tree, but you may wish to spruce up the finish before standing it in your home. Adapt old doors to fit your personal style with paint, stain and embellishments. Paint a section of the door with chalkboard paint and the hall tree doubles as a message board, or attach a mirror to the top section to add design interest.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove any hardware from the old door, such as the door knob and the hinges. Sand the surfaces of the old door with light grade sandpaper to remove any loose particles and to prepare the door for a fresh coat of paint or stain. Sand all wood in the direction of the grain using a backwards/forwards motion. If the old door was previously painted, you must sand the door down to the raw wood before staining. If the old door was previously stained, a light sanding is all that you need before re-staining or applying paint.

    • 2

Lightly sand the two decorative wood brackets to prepare them for primer and paint or stain. The brackets are the braces for the backside of the door to make it stand as a hall tree. Select brackets that are at least 8 inches deep. Wipe the sanded areas with a damp cloth.

    • 3

Place the old door in a horizontal position on a flat surface. Prime or stain one side of the door and all edges. Prime or stain both of the decorative wood brackets. Allow the finish to dry in accordance with the manufacturer’s directions. Flip the door and apply the same finish to the opposite side and edges. Let the finish dry.

    • 4

Paint or apply a coat of polyurethane to the stained finish on one side and all edges of the door. Apply the same finish to the decorative brackets. Let the finish dry. Apply a second coat as desired. Follow the process to paint or polyurethane the opposite side of the door.

    • 5

Place the dry door face down on a flat surface. Position the two decorative brackets 4 inches from each side at the bottom of the door. The flat bottom surface of the brackets should be flush with the flat bottom edge of the old door. Glue and screw the brackets onto the door according to the manufacturer's directions.

    • 6

Affix mirror tiles to the top center panels of the old door, using peel and stick mirror tile adhesive pads. Don't carry the mirror tiles to the edge of the old door.

    • 7

Screw three decorative hooks in an evenly spaced vertical row to the left and then to the right of the mirror tiles. Attach a decorative door handle in place of the old door handle, or replace the old door handle.
