How to Give Furniture a Primitive Country Look

Furniture with a primitive country look is quite distinct from other country decorative forms like French and cottage country. Primitive country design showcases the best of shabby chic with a worn look and rustic colors. Many pieces are designed with a primitive finish intact, but you can also create it yourself.

Instructions

    • 1

Repair or replace any wobbly legs or loose pieces on old furniture. Check the furniture to make sure that while it embodies a distressed look, it is functional without having exposed nails or other hardware which may cause safety or usability issues.

    • 2

Paint the piece with a coat of paint that embodies the primitive country look and that complements the other pieces in your room.

    • 3

Apply a porcelain crackle finish to the furniture to give the look that you’d find on old china dishes. Add a second coat of paint and allow the crackle finish to settle into thin cracks.

    • 4

Use a coarse grit sandpaper to create a worn look on areas that may still look too new.
