How to Make a Stump Stool

Furnishing a home on a budget is dependent upon innovation and the creative use of resources. Tree stumps make an excellent place for a flower pot, but they also make affordable furniture. If you want to add more seating to a room but don't have much space to spare, consider a stump stool. Use this stool indoors or outdoors as an inexpensive, yet durable seating option.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a stump measuring about 3 feet long and at least 12 inches in diameter using a handsaw. Place the stump on a flat surface and check if it sits level. Cut off excess wood until it is level.

    • 2

Store the stump in a cool, dry place for several weeks. This will allow the stump to dry out, making the bark loosen and the stump lighter.

    • 3

Peel of as much bark as possible with your hands. Chip off the remaining bark using a chisel and hammer.

    • 4

Sand the side of the stump with medium-grit sandpaper to remove the hairs on the wood. Use small-grit sandpaper to smooth the top and bottom of the stump. Continue sanding the stump until it is smooth.

    • 5

Wipe down the stump with a damp dusting cloth. This should remove any dirt on the surface of the wood.

    • 6

Paint the stump with an even layer of wood paint or stain using a paint brush. Let the paint or stain dry thoroughly.

    • 7

Decide which end of the stump is the top and which is the bottom. Turn the stump over so that the bottom is on top. Mark four dots, evenly spaced, around the bottom circumference. These are the locations for the plastic furniture feet.

    • 8

Hammer a plastic furniture foot into the stump at each marked location. Flip the stump over so it sits on its feet. The plastic feet will keep the stool from scratching up floors.
