How to Paint Furniture Glossy

Glossy furniture can add an elegant charm to your home furnishings. While you can purchase high gloss furniture, you can also create a glossy look yourself with paint. Painting with a high-gloss finish is not difficult, but high gloss shows mistakes in painting and flaws in furniture more easily than a flat or satin finish. Before painting make sure your furniture doesn't have any flaws in the surface.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the furniture in a well-ventilated area.

    • 2

Sand the furniture with fine-grit sandpaper and a hand sander until the finish is dull. Vacuum excess dust from the furniture and wipe it down with a tack cloth.

    • 3

Pour latex primer into a paint tray and roll the foam paint roller into the primer. Use the roller to cover the entire surface of the furniture. A paintbrush can be used along corners and edges and around detail pieces. The layer of primer should be fairly thin and take one to two hours to dry.

Choose a glossy-finish latex paint and stir to mix thoroughly. Pour the paint into a paint tray, dip in the foam roller and roll a light coat of paint on the furniture. Work in small sections at a time, rolling in an "M" shape when possible. Use a 2-inch synthetic-bristle paintbrush for hard-to-reach areas. Wait for the first coat of paint to dry, then apply a second coat. Repeat as necessary until the furniture is covered with the glossy paint.

Wait for the paint to cure for a week before use.
