Painting on White Laminate Furniture

White laminate furniture is usually inexpensive. The laminate furniture may or may not be exactly what you are looking for in a piece of furniture, but the price is right. Instead of simply living with the furniture, you can update it with paint. Contrary to what some may think, laminate furniture can be painted. Paint will stick well to the furniture if it's properly sanded and should hold up for many years without chipping.

Instructions

    • 1

Unscrew any hardware on the white laminate furniture with a screwdriver. This includes hinges and handles. Set the hardware aside so you can re-install it later.

    • 2

Clean the laminate furniture with alcohol and a rag. Wipe the furniture with the alcohol to remove grease and dirt. Let the laminate dry.

    • 3

Scuff up the white laminate with fine-grit sandpaper and a palm sander. Sand the furniture, but do not sand through the veneer. Sanding is just supposed to remove the high gloss from the laminate. Wipe off the dust from the furniture with a damp cloth.

    • 4

Spread shellac primer on the white laminate furniture with a paintbrush. Apply a thin layer of the primer to the furniture. Allow the primer to dry per the primer manufacturer's directions.

    • 5

Apply a layer of latex primer on top of the shellac primer with a paintbrush. Let the latex primer dry per manufacturer directions.

    • 6

Paint the white laminate furniture. Apply the latex paint in three thin coats (or more as needed). Use a paintbrush to spread the paint. Each coat of paint should be completely dry before applying the next coat of paint.

    • 7

Apply a layer of polyurethane over the latex paint. Spread the polyurethane with a paintbrush and foam paint roller. Let the polyurethane dry completely.

    • 8

Screw the hardware back onto the furniture with a screwdriver.
