How to Apply Trim on an Upholstered Bench

If a bench is still attractive, but its color is not quite right for your room, add upholstery trim to tie the bench into the room's color scheme. Either use flat trim for a touch of color or more elaborate trim for added style. Tasseled trim works well in a formal room while pom pom trim adds a lighthearted touch. If the trim is installed in an area over the frame, you can use upholstery tacks. If the area under the trim is padded, use glue.

Instructions

  1. Upholstery Tacks

    • 1

Measure the distance around the bench where you wish to place the trim. Add 1½ inches to this measurement.

    • 2

Cut a piece of upholstery trim this length.

    • 3

Pin the trim around the bench with straight pins.

    • 4

Hammer an upholstery tack into the center of the trim. Hammer a tack every 2 inches around the bench. It may help to place the bench on its side on a protected surface before you hammer the tacks.

    • 5

Fold the final end of the trim under ½ inch and tack it in place.

    Glue

    • 6

Cut the trim and pin it on as described earlier.

    • 7

Use a hot glue gun to attach the trim. Unpin one end of the trim and run a six-inch line of glue along the bench under the trim. Carefully press the trim in place. Unpin the next section and glue it in the same way.

    • 8

Continue gluing on the trim until you reach the other end. Fold under the last ½ inch and glue it in place, overlapping the first end by 1 inch.
