Troubleshooting Grandfather Clock Weights

The weight canisters are some of the most attractive features of a grandfather clock. The brilliance of the brass cylinders reflects the interior of the clock case beautifully while at the same time powering the time, strike and chime mechanisms. If the weights have been installed incorrectly on their respective chains, these mechanisms will malfunction. Troubleshoot this issue by checking whether the weights are hanging on the correct hooks.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the door of the grandfather clock to reach the weights.

    • 2

Stop the pendulum from swinging by gripping the round bob at the end of its arc on either side.

    • 3

Remove each of the weights from the chain hooks.

    • 4

Check the bottom of the weight canisters to identify their correct positions. The letter "R" stamped onto the bottom represents the weight intended for the right side. An "L" indicates the left side, and "C" stands for the center weight.

    • 5

Install the weight marked with an “R” onto the chain hook on the right side of the grandfather clock as you're facing it. Place the weight gently onto the hook so that it doesn't swing.

    • 6

Attach the “C” weight onto the center chain hook.

    • 7

Place the “L” weight onto the left side chain hook.

    • 8

Tap the pendulum into motion, and close the door.

    • 9

      Set the correct time.
