Painting Furniture Red Over Black

Daring homeowners can transform their ordinary black furniture into a statement piece with a bit of red paint. Painting over a black painted finish requires the use of a paint primer. The primer covers the black paint so the red paint only needs one or two coats for good coverage. Red paint can be purchased in many different paint finishes including semi-gloss and high gloss.

Instructions

    • 1

Sand the furniture. Use fine grit sandpaper to rough up the smooth glossy surface of the furniture finish.

    • 2

Wipe down the furniture with a damp cloth and a household degreaser.

    • 3

Apply latex primer over the black painted furniture with a paintbrush and foam roller. Allow the primer to dry completely.

    • 4

Sand the primer to remove bumps or paintbrush marks in the finish. Sand carefully so you don’t remove the primer. Remove the dust with a damp cloth.

    • 5

Apply red latex paint over the black paint. Paint the entire piece of furniture with a paintbrush and foam paint roller. Let the paint dry and repeat. Apply two or three coats of paint on the furniture. Give the red paint 24 hours to dry before use.
