Can You Use Thompson's WaterSeal to Waterproof Wicker Furniture?

Wicker furniture -- vintage and new -- is typically made from natural grasses, reeds or twisted paper. Wicker furniture is often used as outdoor furniture, although it is not designed to hold up to the rigors of wind, rain and heat. Sunlight is its worst enemy, causing the fibers to fade, crack or split. Thompson's water sealer probably won't harm wicker, but using it is not the best method to protect your furniture.
  1. Treatments

    • Waterproofing products are made for wood decking materials, rather than wicker, which is not wood but paper or plant fibers. Waterproofing deck sealers are usually ineffective for protecting wicker, according to Cathryn Peters, wicker expert. Paint wicker with enamel paint, or coat it with varnish or shellac instead, followed by a thin coat of furniture polish.

    Protection

    • The best way to protect wicker furniture is to shelter it from the elements. If used outdoors, store it on a protected patio or porch, rather than in direct sunlight. Cover it when not in use with furniture covers, or bring it indoors during inclement weather. Store wicker furniture in a dry shed or garage during the winter. Indoor wicker furniture may crack due to very dry conditions. Run a humidifier, or brush it occasionally with a damp sponge.

    Cleaning

    • Although you probably don't need to waterproof wicker furniture, regular cleaning is essential. Vacuum wicker furniture every two to three weeks with the brush attachment of your vacuum. Wipe up spills promptly, and gently scrub away mildew stains with a soft cloth and a diluted bleach solution. Rinse thoroughly to remove the bleach, which can weaken the wicker fibers if allowed to remain. Dry the chair quickly in sunlight, and do not allow anyone to sit in it until it is completely dry.

    Considerations

    • If you decide to apply Thompson's WaterSeal, clean the chair and allow it to dry first. Brush the sealer on an inconspicuous area to make sure that it doesn't damage the chair. Follow package directions carefully, and allow the chair to dry between coats; one coat may be sufficient. Try Thompson's gel water sealer for better control during the application process.
