How to Install Sliding Drawers in Cabinets

A common floor cabinet often provides two storage shelves for larger items, such as pans, bowls and pots. However, some people prefer having a sliding drawer in place instead of the shelves for two reasons; a sliding drawer can store larger items, such as tabletop appliances, and you do not have to bend down to search the cabinet shelf to find what you need. Installing a sliding drawer in an empty cabinet where the shelf has already been removed is a simple process that can easily be completed with a couple of hours.

Instructions

    • 1

Separate each of two sliding tracks into two pieces -- one side being the base panel, which will be installed inside on the cabinet wall, and the other sliding track being installed on the drawer itself. Place the sliding tracks for the drawer aside for now.

    • 2

Open the cabinet and determine how low you wish to install the sliding drawer. The lower you install the drawer in the cabinet, the larger the items you can store on it. Make a pencil line on the inside of the cabinet’s side panel where you want the sliding track to be installed. Make an identical line on the opposite side wall, which has the same height as the original line.

Place one of the base tracks on top of the line drawn inside on one of the side panels. Place the level directly underneath the base track to ensure it is evenly placed. Install the base track on the cabinet wall using a handheld screwdriver and the installation screws that come with the sliding tracks. Repeat this step for the opposite side of the cabinet, so you have two base tracks installed inside the cabinet.

Install the sliding components of the tracks on the two sides of the drawer you wish to make a sliding drawer within the cabinet. Use the installation screws from the sliding track package and the handheld screwdriver. Make sure the tracks are horizontally installed by using the level to get the ideal placement.

Insert the drawer into the base tracks by angling the drawer slightly upward. Pull the drawer in and out of the cabinet unit to ensure it operates smoothly.
