Re-Purposing Furniture to Make Bathroom Furniture

If there's one room in the house that can instantly benefit from the addition of a piece of furniture, it's the bathroom. Furniture can add storage and style to bathrooms, which are often lacking in both these areas. There's no need, however, to buy a piece of furniture designed specifically for the bathroom; many furniture pieces originally designed for other uses work well when re-purposed for use in the bathroom.

Use a chest, table, or other piece of furniture for an attractive and useful bathroom vanity. Re-purposing furniture for vanities has become so popular that many ready-made bathroom vanity chests are now being produced in the style of re-purposed furniture. There's no need, however, to spend extra for vanities created in the style of furniture, when you can transform many furniture pieces into bathroom furniture. Small chests and tables are often retrofitted for use with ready-made vanity tops or vessel sinks, but if you have the room, think out of the vanity box and use a dresser or a sideboard. If your skill set doesn't include plumbing or woodworking, get a professional to help.

Re-purpose a baby or child's outgrown furniture in the bathroom. These pieces, which are often scaled down in size, may not be large enough for growing kids, but might fit perfectly in a bathroom. A baby's changing table, for instance, quickly outlives its usefulness, but can be easily re-purposed for a vanity, or for a dressing table with storage for towels and toiletries. A child's dresser or chest can also be used for a vanity or storage. A desk with hutch offers a place to put on make-up and store toiletries, as well.

Move kitchen, dining and living room furniture into the bath for storage and style. A baker's rack outfitted with baskets becomes storage for towels, toiletries and more. A small desk, with a mirror or shelves hung above it, provides a spot for applying makeup. A sturdy side table can be re-purposed to provide a spot near a tub for towels, books, or other items. Tall, slim bookshelves will fit in nearly any bathroom, no matter how small, to provide instant storage room.
