How to Attach a Lampshade With No Frame

It may take only one person a few seconds to screw in a light bulb, but sometimes attaching the lampshade takes a little more effort. Most lamps are made with a wire frame that extends around the silhouette of the light bulb and the lamp shade attaches to a screw on top of that frame. If you have a lamp without this frame, the lampshade attaches through a clamping mechanism built into the shade.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the lamp and let the light bulb cool down.

    • 2

Place the lampshade over the lamp while looking up through the lampshade, so you can see the light bulb. You will see two oval-shaped wires extending from the top of the shade. Move the shade so that the wire ovals straddle the top of the light bulb with one oval on one side of the bulb and one oval on the opposite side.

    • 3

Push straight down on the lampshade until the wires clamp around the light bulb. Use your fingers to manipulate the ovals around the bulb if they slip off to the side.

    • 4

Adjust the lampshade until it is properly aligned. Grasp it with both hands from the outside of the shade, rather than trying to adjust with the clamp wires or their supports. You are ready to turn on your lamp.
