Repairing a Shaky Piano Bench

Typically, piano benches have a flat seat, held up by four legs, one in each corner. Pianists challenge their creativity by playing thrilling, excitement-inducing music, almost begging pianists to sway their bodies in time. High-spirited, enthusiastic movement causes the legs to loosen and the bench to become shaky. A shaky piano bench can lead to serious consequences such as the crescendo becoming you as you crash to the floor after the legs have given way.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the contents from the piano bench if the bench has a seat that lifts.

    • 2

Lay a large towel or blanket flat on the floor. Turn the piano bench upside down on the towel or blanket to access the legs.

    • 3

Examine the underside of the piano bench at the point at which the legs attach to the bench, looking for loose screws. Back the loose screws out of the joint with a power screwdriver. Dip the screws in wood glue and drive them back in place.

    • 4

Position an L-shaped, metal, surface-mounting brace onto the bottom of the piano bench, running down the leg and facing in toward the center of the bench, if the legs remain wobbly.

    • 5

Make marks, with a pencil, through the predrilled holes on the braces, onto the leg and underside of the piano bench.

    • 6

Equip a power drill with a bit slightly smaller in diameter than the diameter of the mounting brace screws. Drill pilot holes through the marks with the power drill, making the depth 1/4 inch shorter than the thickness of the piano bench seat and legs.

    • 7

Align the predrilled holes on the mounting brace with the pilot holes on the piano bench and legs.

    • 8

Fill the pilot holes with wood glue. Insert the tip of the screw into the predrilled hole and drive the screws into the legs and underside of the piano bench. Wipe excess wood glue off the piano bench with a damp rag or sponge. Let the wood glue set overnight before using the piano bench. Repeat for each piano bench leg.
