How to Move a Piano on Laminate Flooring

Moving a piano on laminate flooring doesn’t require a team of professional movers. Move the piano yourself but exercise caution so you don’t ruin the floor in the process. Pianos have sharp edges where the base meets the floor, and some might have a leg attachment with an inconspicuous problem. Laminate flooring needs adequate protection from scrapes and gouges. You can move a piano quickly and easily with equipment you already have on hand.

Instructions

  1. Upright

    • 1

Fold five bath towels in half then in half again.

    • 2

Ask a helper to tilt the piano backward. Keep tilting it until the foot pedals and front leg pads are approximately 6 inches above the floor.

    • 3

Place a towel under the piano’s foot pedals and under each leg pad. Gently lower the piano and make sure the towels stay in position under the leg pads and foot pedals. This creates a cushion between the piano and the floor.

    • 4

Tilt the piano forward. Keep tilting it until the back legs are approximately 6 inches above the floor. Place a towel under each back leg pad and lower the piano. Push the piano across the laminate floor to its new position.

    • 5

Tip the piano again, forward and backward, to remove the towels.

    Grand

    • 6

Close the piano lid and ask two helpers for assistance with lifting. One helper should stand in front of each front leg and grasp the piano with one hand on either side of the leg where it attaches to the base of the piano. Lift the piano, simultaneously, approximately 6 inches above the floor.

    • 7

Insert a bath towel under the foot pedals. This prevents the pedals from dragging on the laminate surface. Place a bath towel under each of the raised legs to prevent a faulty caster or damaged leg pad from making contact with the floor. Set the piano down.

    • 8

Lift the remaining leg off the floor. To make this lift easy, one person should stand on either side of the leg and both should lift in unison. Place a towel under the leg and lower the piano to the floor.

    • 9

Grasp the corners of each of the towels and flatten them against the piano leg. Secure them to the leg with masking tape. This will prevent the leg pad, or caster, from leaving the towel during the move across the laminate floor.

    • 10

Remove the masking tape from each of the towels after moving the piano. Pick up the keyboard end of the piano and remove the towels from under the foot pedals and the legs. Lift the remaining piano leg, as before, to remove the towel.

    Portable

    • 11

Disconnect the power source to the keyboard. Loop the power cord into a coil and secure it with masking tape; this will keep it from causing a tripping accident.

    • 12

Close the lid, if so equipped, and remove the keyboard from its stand or table.

    • 13

Lift up the keyboard stand, or table, so that the feet do not make contact with the laminate floor. Carry the stand, or table, to its new location.

    • 14

Position the keyboard on its stand, or table, and connect the power source.
