How to Repaint Bamboo Rattan Furniture

Bamboo is a durable, renewable material, which makes it ideal for use in furniture production. The long stalks are associated with Asian cultures, although it is grown across the globe for use as privacy hedges, and in the production of outdoor and indoor furniture. After time and exposure to the elements, the paint on your bamboo rattan furniture will begin to chip and fade, requiring a fresh coat of color. Prepare the bamboo furniture properly to ensure that the paint adheres and stands up against rain and wind.

Wire brush or paint scraper
Damp cloth
Oil-based primer
Natural-bristled paintbrush
Finer paintbrush
Exterior oil-based spray paint
Fine-grit sandpaper

Instructions

  Scrape away the remaining paint with a wire brush or plastic scraper. Rub away the paint with either tool, paying careful to not damage the bamboo underneath.

  Wipe down the bamboo rattan piece with a damp cloth to remove any remaining paint particles and dust. Allow the piece to dry completely before continuing.

  Apply a thin coating of oil-based primer with a natural-bristled paintbrush. Use a larger brush to cover the bulk of the piece and a finer paintbrush to paint the nooks and crannies. Allow the primer to dry at least eight hours, or overnight before continuing.

  Apply a thin layer of exterior oil-based spray paint to the bamboo rattan furniture. Shake the spray paint can for at least 30 seconds and holding it 10 to 12 inches away from the piece, apply the paint in even, back and forth motions.

  Allow the first layer of spray paint to dry completely. Examine the piece and sand away any drips or uneven coverage with fine-grit sandpaper.

  Apply a second and third light coating of the spray paint to the bamboo piece. Allow the final coat to cure for at least 24 hours before using.
