Sand every part of the laminate piece with a palm sander. Sand the piece until you roughen the surface and remove most of the glossy areas. Go over the piece with the 220-grit sandpaper, using the sandpaper on areas the palm sander missed or could not reach.
Wipe the furniture with a tack cloth, removing any dust or debris left behind. Check the piece, and look for any areas that you might have missed with the sandpaper. If you missed any areas, then lightly sand those spots and wipe the piece off again.
Apply the laminate primer to the Ethan Allen piece. Use the paint roller for larger pieces or larger areas, which will help the primer go on smoothly and reduce streaking. For smaller surfaces or decorative surfaces, apply the primer with a paintbrush.
Paint the piece with the type and color of paint you prefer. An interior paint has a slightly glossy sheen, while a high-gloss paint leaves behind a deeper shine. After the first coat dries, apply a second coat. Depending on the shade you want, you may need multiple coats of paint.
Check the furniture over carefully after the paint dries. Look for any signs of chipped or smudged paint or paint that peeled off the laminate. Touch up those areas with more paint, and apply a coat of clear polyurethane, if you desire.
