Different Types of Sectionals

Sectional sofas have been around for decades, but have become increasingly popular as American housing began to include larger living rooms and family rooms than were common in the first half of the last century. They have also become more luxurious as time has gone by, often becoming the centerpiece of American rooms. The term was borrowed originally from semi-finished and constructed furniture that the customer assembled themselves. That term was changed to ready-to-assemble furniture as the more modern sectional came onto the market. They differ from sofa sets in that they are built to be attached permanently or semi-permanently to allow for expansion.
  1. Overview

    • Sectional sofa seats, when combined with end tables or coffee tables, create a comforable, contemporary living room.

Sectional sofas, often referred to simply as sectionals, are found in many configurations. Also known as known as a corner sofa in the United Kingdom, sectional sofas include at least two pieces, one of which is at an angle to the other. More often, there are three or more pieces and they are often used to wrap around a room, providing an instant coordinated look. They are often merchandised with foot stools and matching end tables or coffee tables to create an entire room set.

    Stationary Sectional Furniture

The most common style of sectional furniture, and the least expensive, is a stationary sectional set. This often takes the form of a full three-cushion sofa with one one arm, joined with a loveseat or settee, also missing an arm so the two fit together seamlessly at an angle. Since the sections are bolted together, the bolts can be removed and new sections added if desired by the owner.

    Motion Sectionals

    • The motion sectional seat reclines with an extended, built-in footrest and a reclining back, to enable each individual to choose the position he prefers.

Motion sectionals followed the development of reclining chairs, including built-in footrests and reclining backs. These are generally merchandised with each seat including reclining functions so that each person can choose the position most comfortable to each. Even though motion furniture is generally more expensive than standard sectionals, it started becoming popular in the 1950s and 1960s, as the television room and family room became ubiquitous in the American home.

    Home Theater Sectionals

    • In recent decades, home theaters and home theater seats have become popular because more people are watching movies in the comfort of their own home.

The latest innovation in the sectional world is the home theater sectional installation. These take the motion sectional to another level, imitating theater seating that can be expanded at will by simply attaching more seats. These look more like oversize attached chairs, similar to the seats in a first-class airline compartment, built with large armrests, headrests and such features as cup holders and storage in the armrest.
