DIY Terra Cotta Wine Rack

Terra cotta wine racks are prized for their ability to cool wine naturally by absorbing humidity from the air. Few people are skilled at throwing pottery, however, and custom-made terra cotta racks are pricey. The solution is combining terra cotta wine storage tiles with a cabinet to hold them. Wine storage tiles are typically 12-inch-long hexagonal tubes with a hollow center. They stack neatly in a honeycomb pattern inside a wooden cabinet that holds them steady.

Things You'll Need

  • Hexagonal, terra cotta wine storage tiles, 6-inch diameter, 12 inches long
  • 1-by-12 boards
  • Circular saw
  • Power drill
  • Drill bit set
  • 1 1/2-inch wood screws
  • 1 sheet 3/4-inch furniture-grade plywood

Instructions

    • 1

Stand the wine-storage tiles upright. If they are closed on one end, place the closed end down.

    • 2

Push the flat sides of the tiles together into a balanced arrangement, square or rectangular, with at least two tiles per row. Wider rows create a more stable rack.

    • 3

Measure across the widest point of the arrangement. Measure again along the tallest point of the arrangement.

    • 4

Measure along one 1-by-12 board to the width measurement plus one inch. Mark the measurement on the edge of the board with a pencil. Set a framing square snug against the edge of the board with its corner aligned with the mark. Trace the perpendicular edge of the square across the board with a pencil.

    • 5

Cut the 1-by-12 straight across at the pencil line with a circular saw. Repeat to measure, mark and cut another board the same length.

    • 6

Measure along one 1-by-12 to the height measurement plus one inch. Mark the edge of the board and trace a straight cutting line with the square. Cut the board at the line, and repeat the process to make a matching board.

    • 7

Select a drill bit the same diameter or slightly smaller than the wood screw’s shank. Fasten the bit to the power drill’s chuck.

    • 8

Lay one longer board flat on a work table. Stand a shorter board upright, butted against the end of the longer board.

    • 9

Drill four evenly spaced pilot holes through the side of the upright board and into the end of the longer board.

    • 10

Switch the drill bit for a Phillips head bit. Insert 1 1/2-inch wood screws through the pilot holes, fastening the boards together into the shape of an L.

    • 11

Turn the assembly on its side with the narrow edges of the boards against the table. Butt the remaining two boards against the open ends of the assembly, forming a square or rectangle. Pre-drill screw holes through the corners and fasten them with screws, completing an open box.

    • 12

Place a sheet of 3/4-inch plywood on the work table. Set the box frame on top of the plywood, aligning two perpendicular sides and the adjoining corner of the box with two perpendicular edges and adjoining corner of the plywood. Trace the outline of the box onto the plywood and remove the box.

    • 13

Cut the plywood along the outline with a circular saw.

    • 14

Place the cut plywood on top of the box frame. Adjust them until all four sides and corners align. Drill pilot holes, spaced four inches apart, through the plywood and into the box along all four sides.

    • 15

Insert screws through the plywood and into the box, fastening the back of the wine rack cabinet to the frame.

    • 16

Stand the cabinet upright where you will store the wine. Stack the wine storage tiles inside the frame with the openings facing out.
