Repairing a Leather Settee

Some things in life age gracefully; unfortunately, leather furniture isn't always one of them. This natural material is prone to cracking when allowed to dry out, destroying the luxe look of your furniture. If you've recently obtained an old leather settee, it is possible to repair and restore the piece to like-new condition. However, the process may take several days and may involve a laundry list of materials, depending on the condition issues of the settee.

  • Tweezers
  • Leather glue

Instructions

  1. Repairing Punctures or Tears

    • 1

Insert a piece of canvas through the tears or punctures in the surface of the leather, laying the canvas flat behind the leather.

    • 2

Affix the patch to the settee leather. Use leather-safe glue around the edges of the entire patch. Allow to dry completely.

    • 3

Spread leather filling compound over the patched areas, creating a surface that is smooth and even with the rest of the settee.

    • 4

Heat with a blow-dryer set on the lowest setting to harden the filler.

    • 5

Mask the patched areas, smoothing on leather recoloring balm or leather dye spray with a sponge or cotton swab.

    Repairing Small Cracks

    • 6

Fill any small cracks with leather-safe filler material.

    • 7

Dry out the material until hard, using a blow-dryer.

    • 8

Seal with spray-on leather sealant and let dry.

    • 9

Cover cracks with leather recoloring cream or leather dye.

    Cleaning

    • 10

Spray leather cleaner over the settee to remove all traces of dirt and skin oils.

    • 11

Wipe down the settee with a dry cloth or sponge. For extremely grubby leather, cover the settee with leather cleaner and rub all over with a bristle brush before wiping down.

    • 12

Clean the settee every three to six months to maintain its cleanliness.

    Dye

    • 13

Cover up any faded or discolored areas on the leather with a leather recoloring balm or spray-on leather dye that matches the color of your leather settee.

    • 14

Spread the recoloring product out in a thin layer with a sponge and allow to dry for 15 minutes.

    • 15

Add additional layers of color until desired depth of color has been achieved. Let each layer dry for 15 minutes, with the final application being left to dry overnight.

    Conditioning

    • 16

Apply leather conditioning product to a soft cloth.

    • 17

Work the product into the leather using a circular motion.

    • 18

Remove any excess product with a separate cloth. Condition leather every three to six months.
