How to Paint Furniture With KILZ Primer

Give new life to thrift-store furniture by sanding and repainting it. A crucial step in furniture restoration is the application of a coat of primer. KILZ brand primer is a sealant available in spray cans, making it ideal for prepping furniture before painting. Spray primer allows you to fill in grooves and joints without brush streaks, puddles or drips. Work with KILZ primer outdoors at a temperature of above 50 degrees F for best results.

Instructions

    • 1

Sand the furniture to remove as much of the old paint or stain as possible. Use a palm sander for large pieces of furniture or rough-grit sheets for smaller pieces.

    • 2

Wet a sponge with water and squeeze out the excess. Wipe down the furniture to remove any dust left over from sanding. Allow the furniture to dry completely.

    • 3

Remove the cap from the can of KILZ spray primer. Shake the can for 30 seconds to mix the paint.

    • 4

Hold the can 12 inches from the furniture as you spray the entire surface. Keep the can moving constantly to prevent dripping. Allow the furniture to dry for one hour or until the first coat of KILZ primer is dry to the touch.

    • 5

Apply a second coat of KILZ primer in the same manner as the first. Allow the furniture to dry completely, then paint it with the paint of your choice.
