Cut five pieces of half-inch lumber — the shelf-top of the rack at 38¼ by 3 inches, the back at 37½ by 5 inches, the two sides at 3 by 5 inches and the 39½ by 1½-inch hanging bar.
Cut a rectangular hole in both of the side pieces with a jigsaw so that it is large enough to fit the hanging bar through end-on. The lower forward corner of the hole should be about 1½ inches from the bottom and one inch from the front of the side piece. Taper the forward edge of the side pieces to have a gentle diagonal slant, if desired.
Assemble the pieces, screwing the sides to both ends of the back and adding the shelf on top. Slide the hanging bar through the holes to ensure that it fits and remove it again.
Apply finish or wood stain to both the bar and the main shelf as desired and reassemble. Screw hanging brackets to the back of the quilt hanger to allow you to fasten it to the wall. Drape a quilt over the hanging bar and place books or knickknacks on the shelf.
