Measure the width and height of the doorway and the width of each side of the furniture. Compare these measurements to determine the best position for the piece that will allow you to carry it through the doorway. For instance, you can place a sofa on its back and carry it through a 36-inch doorway sideways if the back of the sofa is even a little less than 36 inches wide.
Remove the parts of the furniture that are not permanently attached, such as the seat cushions on a sofa or the drawers in a chest.
Collapse the furniture when possible. Separate a leaf table, for instance, and carry each piece through the doorway to reassemble it in the dining room.
Remove the door from the frame. This allows more space for you to maneuver the oversize item through the doorway. Remove the screws from the hinges with a screwdriver and place the door in a safe location.
