How to Get Oversize Furniture Through a Doorway

Oversize furniture can make a room appear cozy and comfortable and is ideal for large rooms. However, doorways come in standard sizes, between 30 by 81 inches and 36 by 85 inches, regardless of the size of the room. This creates some difficulty when you are ready to carry the oversize pieces into your home. Fortunately, you can solve this problem with creativity and, if needed, two simple tools.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the width and height of the doorway and the width of each side of the furniture. Compare these measurements to determine the best position for the piece that will allow you to carry it through the doorway. For instance, you can place a sofa on its back and carry it through a 36-inch doorway sideways if the back of the sofa is even a little less than 36 inches wide.

    • 2

Remove the parts of the furniture that are not permanently attached, such as the seat cushions on a sofa or the drawers in a chest.

    • 3

Collapse the furniture when possible. Separate a leaf table, for instance, and carry each piece through the doorway to reassemble it in the dining room.

    • 4

Remove the door from the frame. This allows more space for you to maneuver the oversize item through the doorway. Remove the screws from the hinges with a screwdriver and place the door in a safe location.
