DIY Ideas for Wall Shoe Racks

Rather than keeping your shoe collection in a jumbled mess at the bottom of your closet -- which can be difficult to look through, as well as dusty -- make your own wall shoe rack. Recycle items to make your rack, if possible, such as reusing an old bed bunk ladder or dresser drawer.
  1. Dresser Drawers

    • Create your own wall shoe rack by mounting old dresser drawers to the wall. Use those made of lighter wood material, and cut the front out of each dresser if desired with a saw. If you are opting to leave the front piece on, mount the racks lower on the wall, such as in a walk-in closet, so you can easily look through them. Paint the drawers if you want; use different solid colors for each drawer, or paint them in swirls, patterns or assorted designs. You can also sand and stain them for a more "rustic" look.

    Ladder

    • Recycle an old wooden ladder by turning it into a wall shoe rack. Ladders from old bunk beds can work, as they are often lightweight. A ladder can be attached to the wall as a shoe rack two ways: Either mount only the top of the ladder to the wall to make a shoe rack that comes out from the wall and toward you, or attach wooden boards to the ladder, then the ladder to the wall, to give some space between the ladder rungs and the wall for hanging shoes.

    Drain Pipes

    • Drain pipes may be difficult to attach to the wall, but they can be joined together with heavy-duty glue and ropes, and then placed up against a wall as a shoe rack. Arrange the pipes in a square, triangular or other design, and use your binding agents to keep them together. Depending on the size of your shoes, you may only be able to fit one shoe per pipe, though cloth shoes, such as house slippers, can fit multiple pairs in one pipe.

    Wooden Slats

    • Recycle 2-by-4s and other wooden slats you have leftover from assorted projects as wall shoe racks. Use metal brackets and screws to mount the wood pieces as desired on your wall; go for diagonal, vertical or horizontal designs or any design you like depending on the amount of wall space you are working with. Set up two or three pairs of shoes per rack, and arrange them by type, such as boots, running sneakers and high heels. Paint or stain each wood piece, such as using sponge painting on one rack and stencils on another.
