Choose a nightstand with the correct proportions to suit your dog. A nightstand without drawers is recommended, as it offers more interior space. As a rule of thumb, there must be enough space inside the nightstand for the dog to comfortably turn around.
Remove the doors and hinges from the nightstand, using the screwdriver.
Sand the entire nightstand with 220-grit sandpaper, paying close attention to any rough edges. Remove all residual finish to prepare the wood for primer and paint.
Clean the nightstand to remove any remaining dirt as well as dust resulting from the sanding.
Apply two coats of low-VOC 100 percent acrylic interior latex primer to the entire nightstand. Allow one hour of drying time between coats.
Apply two coats of low-VOC interior latex paint in the color of your choice. Select semi-gloss paint, as it is more durable and easier to clean than a flat paint. Allow one hour of drying time between coats. Let the nightstand dry thoroughly overnight before introducing your dog to its new retreat.
Place an appropriately sized dog pillow inside the nightstand.
