# How to Paint a China Hutch to Look Like an Alder Color
Alder wood can be painted with wood stain to look like a wide range of brown and tan rustic colors such as cherry, red mahogany and pecan. As long as you are do a suitable job applying the wood stain evenly to the china hutch, the bold new color will look amazing on the old piece. Although every wood stain is different by both color and composition, there are some rules that should always be considered when treating wood furniture to have a new alder wood stain.

- Alder colored wood stain
- Prestain conditioner
- Sample piece of alder wood
- Gloves

Paint a coat of the wood stain that you are considering to a small piece of wood similar to the wood used to build the china hutch. If you like it after one or two coats have been painted onto the test piece, you can safely use it on your hutch.

Coat the china hutch with a single layer of prestain conditioner to treat the wood. Although this is not needed for all wood types, this will ensure that the stain you choose will take well to the china hutch.

Brush a coat of stain onto the hutch. Allow the stain to completely dry before deciding to apply another layer of wood stain. Oil-based stain can take up to 24 hours to dry, while water-based stains dry within a few hours.
