Sand all the surfaces of stained furniture to remove any sheen or gloss, using fine- to medium-grit sandpaper. Do this lightly by hand to avoid damaging the furniture. This is especially important if the stained furniture has a layer of varnish because roughing up the surface helps new paint adhere.
Dampen a rag with water and wipe away the sanding dust.
Apply a coat of primer over the furniture piece with a paint roller or a paintbrush to help seal in the stain so it won't bleed through the new layer of paint. Primer also helps paint adhere to the furniture surface. Let the primer dry completely, which usually takes up to one or two hours.
Apply Krylon spray paint over the primer in two or three thin coats until you achieve the color you want. Don't worry about the direction of application because applying spray paint does not leave marks like putting on paint with a brush or roller does. Wait one or two hours until the paint dries after each coat; the drying time might vary by product.
Brush on a coat or two of a protective topcoat all over the furniture. This optional step makes the furniture easier to clean and helps it better withstand wear and tear.
