How to Build Mudroom Cubbies for Coats

A mudroom can get quite messy-looking without the proper storage areas for boots, shoes, hats and coats. While a row of coat hooks can at least keep coats off the ground, they don’t always look neat and tidy, so using wall cubbies for coats is one way to store them and keep them looking orderly at the same time. Coat cubbies are quite easy to put together, but make sure you measure your coats before construction and adjust the cubby size accordingly.

Instructions

    • 1

Stand two planks of 40-inch, 1-by-10 lumber on their 1-inch edges with 17 inches between them. Fit two planks of 17-inch, 1-by-10 lumber between the ends of the 40-inch planks. This will create a rectangle shape.

    • 2

Glue the rectangle together, then drill three pilot holes, sized for the shaft of 1 1/2-inch wood screws, through the 40-inch planks into the ends of the 17-inch planks. Secure the rectangle together with 1 1/2-inch screws driven through the pilot holes.

    • 3

Place a sheet of 17-by-42-inch, 1/2-inch-thick plywood over the top of the rectangle. The sides of the plywood should be flush all around with the sides of the rectangle. Secure the plywood in place with 1 1/2-inch screws every 5 to 6 inches around the edges into the rectangle frame underneath. This is the coat cubby, with the plywood being the back.

    • 4

Paint the coat cubby, inside and out, and let it dry before installing.

    • 5

Locate a wall stud in the mudroom where you want to install the coat cubby, using a stud finder, and mark its position.

    • 6

Place the cubby on the wall over the stud position at the desired height. Around 60 to 70 inches off the floor is ideal for most people. Use a level to ensure the cubby is positioned straight.

    • 7

Drill five pilot holes sized for the shaft of 3-inch drywall screws down the center of the cubby back into the wall stud. Secure the cubby to the wall with 3-inch drywall screws driven through the pilot holes. Touch up the screw holes with paint.

Evenly space three coat hooks about 3 inches down from the top of the cubby, along the back. Secure the coat hooks in place with the screws that accompany them to finish your mudroom coat cubby.
