How to Make a Simple Tree-Stump Bench

Removing a tree is like losing an old friend. The solid, old oak or pine that stood for years providing shade and support for a tree house or swing is gone. However, by planning ahead, you can keep a part of the old tree and make new memories. If the tree service leaves the stump, cutting it at 18 inches from the ground, it becomes the base to a sturdy bench where you and your family can relax on a hot summer day.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the diameter of the tree stump. If the stump is less than 12 inches in diameter, consider using it as the center support to the bench instead of an end support.

    • 2

Place the 2-by-24-inch board on top of the stump, flush with one side, and extend the remainder of the board out from the other side. While a helper holds the board firmly in place, measure from the bottom edge of the board to the ground.

    • 3

Cut a log from the cut-down tree to the measurement taken. Place the log under the other end of the board. Use a spirit level to ensure the board is level. If a log is not available, two pressure-treated posts, 4-by-4 inch, may be substituted as legs. Attach by screwing under the outside corners of the board with 3 1/2-inch deck screws.

    • 4

Predrill and screw the board to the top of the log using deck screws. Repeat at the stump, predrilling and screwing the board to the top of the stump.

    • 5

Sand the board smooth with an electric sander. Start with an 80- to 120-grit sandpaper to smooth the surface and finish with a 150- to 180-grit sandpaper. Wipe with a tack cloth to remove all dust.

    • 6

Apply two to four coats of spar urethane to the board using a paintbrush. Allow to dry four hours between coats, sanding with a 220- to 240-grit sandpaper before adding another coat.
