How to Make a Rolling Rack for Your Clothes With Galvanized Pipes

Galvanized pipe can be used to make a rolling rack for your clothes. Galvanized pipe is designed to resist rust, and it can be used to create other objects, such as a rolling rack used for clothing. The rack does not need to support heavy weight, so it is a safe type of object to experiment with.

Things You'll Need

  • Cold saw
  • Saddle
  • Saddle fusion tool
  • Heating tool

Instructions

    • 1

Place the galvanized pipe under the cold saw blade. Pull down the handle to move the blade through the metal. Cut two galvanized pipes that are the height that you want them to be – minus six inches. These are the side pipes.

    • 2

Use the cold saw to cut out one piece of pipe that is the desired width. Cut a second length of pipe a few inches longer. Use a pipe narrow enough to fit hangers on. The longer one is the top pipe, while the shorter one is the base pipe.

    • 3

Cut two pieces of pipe, each one half as long as the side pipe. These are the wheeled pipes.

    • 4

Get a saddle that will fit inside the side pipes. The saddle will weld to the side of another pipe, allowing you to create a T shape.

    • 5

Clamp the fitting on the saddle fusion tool.

    • 6

Place the heater beneath the heating base. Place the heating tool against the pipe main. This step takes 5 seconds.

    • 7

Apply pressure. Melted material become visible at the top-center of the main pipe, after three to five seconds. The pipe has a certain amount of time that the heat should be applied, based on how large the pipe is. For example, a pipe that has a 2-inch IPS should be heated for no longer than 35 seconds, which is called the “maximum heat time.” The bead-up period should never exceed 1/3 of the maximum heating time.

    • 8

Remove the heater from the saddle fitting and apply pressure. The heated saddle should remain joined to the pipe until the pipe cools, so the saddle joins to the pipe.

    • 9

Join the side pipes to the saddles by clamping the exposed end of the saddle to one of the exposed ends of one of the side pipes. Align both pipe ends. Apply heat to the pipe ends until they start to show melted metal beading. Apply pressure to push the pipe ends together. Wait for the pipe ends to cool.

    • 10

Use the saddle method to attach one end of the base pipe to the side of one of the side pipes, towards the bottom. Attach the other end of the base pipe to the other side pipe, in the same position. This will combine both side pipes and the base pipe into one object. Attach one wheeled pipe in the middle to the end of one side pipe, on the side closest to the base pipe. Do the same for the other wheeled pipe. You should have most of the rolling rack, but no top.

    • 11

Use the saddle method to attach the longer top part to the side parts.

    • 12

Use a Dremmel tool to drill four holes into the wheeled pipes. Use a bit that will create enough width to fit the rolling wheels inside.

    • 13

Insert four wheels into the holes you just drilled.
