A DIY Lumber Storage Bin for the Woodshop

Every woodshop needs a rough-about lumber storage bin for keeping scraps and smaller pieces of lumber tidy and out of sight, but within easy reach. A long, lidded storage bin is the ideal place for storing lumber in the woodshop and can even be placed underneath most work benches for easy access. The basic design can be modified to suit the average length of lumber you need to store.

Instructions

    • 1

Stand two planks of 13-inch 1-by-3 lumber on their 1-inch edge, 15 inches apart on your work table. Place two pieces of 15-inch 1-by-3 lumber on either end, to form a 15-by-15-inch square frame.

    • 2

Glue the frame together at the joints, and let dry. Secure the frame with two 1 1/2-inch wood screws through the 15-inch planks into the ends of the 13-inch planks. Repeat with another two 13-inch and 15-inch planks, so you have two identical frames.

    • 3

Fit a piece of 15-by-15-inch, 3/4-inch plywood over the top of each frame; it should be flush on all sides with the edges of the frames. Secure in place with 1 1/2-inch wood screws through the plywood into the frames every 3 to 4 inches. These are the ends of the lumber storage bin.

    • 4

Lay a piece of 15-by-60-inch plywood flat on your work bench for the base of the bin. Position the two ends of the bin on top, with the plywood sides facing out and flush with the ends of the base.

    • 5

Secure the ends to the base with four evenly-spaced 1 1/2-inch wood screws through the side of the frame that touches the base, into the base.

    • 6

Fit two pieces of 16-by-60-inch plywood, the bin sides, over the sides of the base and the bin ends. The bottom of the side panels should be flush with the bottom of the base, the top flush with the top of the ends. Secure in place with 1 1/2-inch wood screws through the side panels into the base and ends every 3 to 4 inches.

    • 7

Position a 50-inch piano hinge centered along one 60-inch edge of a piece of 15-by-60-inch plywood. Fasten half the hinge in place with 1/2-inch wood screws driven through all the pre-punched screw holes in the piano hinge. This is the lid of the storage bin.

    • 8

Center the lid over the top of the storage bin base, and fasten the other side of the piano hinge to the back of the bin base to finish the lumber storage bin.
