How to Build a Hammock Chair

Hammocks are great for taking a nap, but sometimes you want the same gently-swaying experience while sitting up. This is the role filled by the hammock chair, a shorter hammock with a wooden bar connecting the two ends that's designed to sit in sideways. You can make your own hammock chair using a series of half-hitch knots, creating the cord netting that makes up the seat portion of the chair and then adding the rope and wooden supports to give the chair its shape.

Things You'll Need

  • Rope
  • Hammock cord
  • Netting shuttle
  • 1-inch diameter stick
  • 2 metal rings

Instructions

    • 1

Tie the ends of a 3-foot length of rope to each other and secure the loop to a chair leg, doorknob or other solid point. Wind a netting shuttle with hammock cord and tie the free end to the rope loop. Let the shuttle hang down.

    • 2

Hold a stick horizontally under the loop, behind the hanging cord. Wrap the cord around the stick and pull it up through the loop and down to the right. Hold the wrapped cord tight with your thumb while tying a half-hitch around the loop and bringing the shuttle to the right when you're finished.

    • 3

Make 20 such loops and knots along the stick, then turn the entire thing over so the shuttle is hanging from the left instead of the right. Remove the stick from the series of loops and hold it horizontally beneath them. Make another row of 20 loops, this time tying the half-hitches around the small loops of cord in the row above rather than from the original rope loop.

    • 4

Continue creating rows until you have 40. Reload the shuttle and tie the new cord to the old if you run out. Cut the rope loop and remove it from the hammock net.

    • 5

Cut 40 pieces of cord, each 36 inches long. Tie each cord to one of the loops in the first or last row of the net and tie the free ends to metal rings -- those on the left side of the net to one and those on the right to the other. Tie a rope to each ring as well, and tie a knot in both ropes about 6 inches from the ring.

Drill two holes through a 36-inch dowel close to the ends. Thread the ropes through the holes so the dowel rests on the knots you tied. Hang the hammock chair from a sturdy support of your choice.
