How to Cover a Chair With Tacking Strip

Turn an outdated or worn chair into a striking piece of furniture by reupholstering it. When reupholstering a chair, it can be difficult to conceal the staples and any other materials that are used to complete the project on the back of the chair. This is where a tacking strip comes in handy. This strip is made to secure upholstery to the back of the chair, covering up any staples and other unsightly elements. It gives the chair a seamless look.

Instructions

    • 1

Run a length of metal tacking strip along one of the sides of the back of the chair. The part of the tacking strip that contains the small holes should run against the back of the chair; the tacks should be facing out.

    • 2

Staple the tacking strip to the back of the chair. Insert a staple through each of the holes on the tacking strip.

    • 3

Attach tacking strips along the remaining edges of the chair in the same manner.

    • 4

Push the tacks down, halfway, with your fingers.

    • 5

Place a piece of fabric cut 1/2-inch larger than each of the sides of the back of the over teeth of the tack strip. Use a straight edge to push the fabric into the teeth on the tacking strip.

    • 6

Push the teeth of the tack strip closed with your fingers to secure the fabric into the teeth and to the back of the chair.

    • 7

Bang a mallet across the back of the chair along the tacking strip to firmly secure the fabric in place.
