How to Add Back Cushions to a Barstool

Barstools with a back can be uncomfortable with just the wood slats, but finding cushions that fit the barstool’s curves can be difficult. Instead, you can take a simple cushion and modify it to become a perfectly fitting back cushion for your barstool. This project requires a basic knowledge of sewing for success.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure your barstool. Write down the length from the first rung to the last. If you want the cushion to curve with the stool, also take measurements at the shortest point and the tallest point.

    • 2

Draw out the measurements with chalk onto your standard seat cushion. If the cushion you're using has special edging or frills you want to keep, give plenty of space toward the top.

    • 3

Cut 1 inch below the sketched chalk line that you made in step 1. The extra inch is your seam allowance and helps you to sew the cushion closed. Cut out the extra inch of stuffing from inside the cushion so you can fold the fabric inside the cushion.

    • 4

Tuck and pin the raw edges inside the cushion. Sew a straight seam across as close as possible to the edge of the cushion fabric with your sewing machine.

    • 5

Set the cushion along the chair and mark the places where you want the cushion to attach to the barstool. You’ll need to mark two places to avoid the cushion flopping or turning. The most likely attachment spots are the two outside rungs on the barstool's back.

    • 6

Cut four squares of fabric from the cushion scraps. The squares should ideally be 2 1/2-by-2 1/2 inches. These strips will have Velcro on the ends for securing the barstools.

    • 7

Press in the edges of the squares with an iron and fold over the squares so the print side of the fabric is facing out. Pin the squares closed.

    • 8

Sew the strip closed with a straight stitch. Cut and attach the Velcro to each strip.

    • 9

Sew the strips onto the cushion by hand, ensuring the Velcro is on the right side to lock into place.
