DIY Floating Vanity

A floating vanity shelf provides an open and airy feel to the bathroom by allowing for a clean view of the entire floor. This makes cleaning the bathroom an easier task and reduces the number of corners and places for dirt and mess to accumulate. Raising the vanity off the floor requires wall-mounted plumbing and can be adjusted to accommodate any arrangement of wall pipes. The vanity can also be customized in height and depth to fit any sink setup, or can be doubled in width to fit a double-sink bathroom.

Instructions

  1. Assembling the Vanity

    • 1

Set two 1/2-by-18-by-32-inch side boards upright, parallel to each other on the working surface. Lower a 1/2-by-18-by-24-inch top board on top of them and rearrange the boards so that the outside edges of the top board are even all the way around with the outside surfaces of the side boards. Make holes every ten inches down through the top board and into the ends of the side boards. Push 1 1/2-inch wood screws into each hole and tighten them into place with the drill until the heads of the screws are flush with the wood surface.

    • 2

Flip the assembled boards upside down and repeat the process with a 1/2-by-18-by-24-inch bottom board. Rotate the boards so that there is an open side facing upward.

    • 3

Lay a 1/2-by-24-by-33-inch rear board on top of the previously assembled boards, ensuring that the outside ends of the rear board are even with the outsides of the adjoining boards. Drill evenly spaced holes every 14 inches around the edge of the rear board and into the adjoining boards. Fasten the boards securely together by placing 1 1/2-inch wood screws in the holes and tightening them.

    • 4

Flip the vanity over and set another 1/2-by-24-by-33-inch board on top of the open space to serve as the vanity door. Position two hinges evenly between the vanity and the door. Mark the locations of each attachment point in the hinges and drill holes for the screws at these locations. Attach the hinges to the door and the vanity with 1/2-inch wood screws.

    Hanging the Vanity

    • 5

Establish the locations of the studs using the stud finder and mark each side of the studs with a pencil. Hold the vanity in its intended position and note where the vanity will need to be cut in the rear board and top board to make room for the pipes and sink. Cut out these portions of the vanity.

    • 6

Hold the vanity in place so it is flush against the wall and set a carpenter's level on top of it. Adjust the vanity so it is level, and mark locations for six screw attachments inside the vanity which will land on the studs in the wall. Hold the vanity to the wall with the help of an assistant and drill holes in these positions, making sure the drill bit strikes the studs.

    • 7

Pass 3-inch wood screws through a washer and then insert them in the holes through the vanity and into the wall. Tighten them with the drill until the washer presses lightly into the wood surface.
