Making your own finishing materials is a rewarding experience. It allows you to know exactly what is going into your home so you can avoid allergens, irritants or chemicals. If you use a natural paint, such as milk, flour or lime, on furniture, you will get an old, authentic look similar to white washing. This look works on many pieces of furniture but doesn't stand up to a lot of use. However, you can coat the furniture with an oil-based glaze made out of powdered pigments and chalk that will protect the furniture while giving it a shinier finish.
