DIY Wood Kitchen Drawer Dividers

There’s nothing more annoying than having a cutlery drawer with no dividers and all your cutlery laying higgledy-piggledy in the drawer. A quick solution is to make your own wooden drawer dividers, which will keep your cutlery nice and neat and easily accessible. Drawer dividers can also be useful in keeping linens organized in the kitchen, or separating spices if you use a drawer for your spice storage.

  • Measuring tape
  • 1/4 inch plywood
  • Saw
  • 1/2 by 3 lumber
  • Wood glue

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the size of the drawer for length and width. Cut a piece of 1/4 inch plywood to this size for the bottom of the drawer divider.

    • 2

Cut a piece of 1/2 by 3 inch lumber to the width of the drawer, and two pieces of the same lumber to 3/4 the length of the drawer.

    • 3

Divide the width of the plywood in three, then glue on the two longer pieces of lumber at these points, with the ends of the lumber flush with one end of the plywood, and the lumber standing on a 1/2 inch edge. These pieces will be parallel to the long side of the plywood.

    • 4

Glue the remaining piece of lumber across the plywood, abutting the ends of the two longer pieces of lumber, perpendicular to the long side of the plywood. This creates a kind of “T” shape, if you imagine the “T” had two stems instead of one.

    • 5

Turn the plywood over so the back is exposed. Secure the lumber dividers in place with finishing nails hammered through the plywood into the dividers every 3 to 4 inches.

    • 6

Paint or varnish the drawer divider and let it dry completely before sitting it in the bottom of the drawer. The two longer dividers create three sections for forks, spoons and knives, and the shorter divider that abuts the other two creates a front section for teaspoons.
