Vinyl Grades In Furniture Durability

Vinyl is an extremely durable and versatile fabric. It comes in many colors, textures and types, making it a practical choice for covering furniture. Learn about different types of vinyl so you can choose the type with the right thickness, stretch and durability to fit your lifestyle.
  1. Rub Rate

    • The durability of vinyl is measured in something called a "rub rate." This refers to the number of times the fabric can be rubbed without disintegrating. The higher the rub rate, the more durable the fabric. For example, a fabric with a rub rate of 5,000 would theoretically be five times as durable as a fabric with a rub rate of 1,000.

    Patent Vinyl

    • Patent vinyl is shiny and smooth. Since it has only a little bit of two-way stretch, it is ideal for upholstery. Patent vinyl typically has a rubber backing, which helps it to stand up to use and abuse. This type of vinyl is often used to cover automobile and boat seats.

    Imitation Leather

    • Imitation leather is a type of vinyl often used for furniture upholstery. It is popular with those who are opposed to using real leather because of animal rights convictions. It is sold in different grades and thicknesses, so be sure to purchase upholstery grade, not clothing grade, for use in furniture.

    Embossed Vinyl

    • Embossed vinyl is similar to faux leather, but it has a textured pattern. Available patterns include snakeskin, alligator or other reptile skin. Embossed vinyl is more often seen used with purses and fashion accessories, but has become desirable for use in furniture as well. It comes in different thicknesses, so be sure to purchase a vinyl with a high rub rate for use with furniture.
