DIY Vanity Cabinet

Vanity cabinets are the perfect place for bathroom storage, and the addition of a new vanity cabinet can make a dramatic change in a bathroom. Building one yourself allows for complete freedom of design regarding shape and the level of detail, as well as the wood and finishing used. By building the vanity yourself, you could make vanities to fit four bathrooms before the cost would match that of one commercial vanity. This project requires only basic materials and tools, and can be done by anyone regardless of experience.

Instructions

    • 1

Set out 2 plywood boards with dimensions of 3/4-by-18-by-36-inch. Have an assistant hold these boards on their longer, thinner edges, parallel to each other with two feet between them, as these are the side boards of the vanity.

    • 2

Put a 3/4-by-18-by-24-inch plywood board up against the ends of the side boards. Drill holes every six inches on this board, which is the top board of the vanity, and into the ends of each side board. Screw a 2-inch wood screw into each hole.

    • 3

Put another 3/4-by-18-by-24-inch plywood board against the other end of the side boards and attach it in the same manner. Consider this board the bottom board of the cabinet.

    • 4

Set a 3/4-by-6-by-24-inch plywood board and a 3/4-by-24-by-31 1/2-inch plywood board on top of the cabinet frame so that the smaller board, which is the bottom front board, covers the edge of the bottom board. Have the larger board cover the edge of the top board, as it is the door.

    • 5

Drill holes every six inches through the bottom front board and into the frame boards beneath it. Put 2-inch wood screws in the drilled holes and tighten them up to completely attach the bottom front board to the frame.

    • 6

Place 2 side-mount cabinet hinges in between the door and one of the side boards. Mark the holes for the hinge screws, lifting the door board off the frame if necessary. Drill out each of the hinge screw holes and screw 3/4-inch wood screws into each hole to attach the hinges to both the door and the side board.

    • 7

Drill a hole for the knob on the front of the door. Set the knob bolt in the hole and tighten the nut on the other side of the door with a wrench.

    • 8

Position each half of a magnetic cabinet latch on the door and edge of the side board. Mark the location of the screw holes and drill them out. Attach the two halves of the magnetic latch with 3/4-inch wood screws.

    • 9

Set 1-inch metal L-brackets along each joint between boards, spacing them every six inches. Drill 3/4-inch wood screws into each hole in the L-brackets.

    • 10

Position the vanity in place and set the sink on top of it. Mark the area that needs to be removed for sink installation. Cut out the area with a saw. Reposition the sink in the hole and adjust as necessary.
