How to Split Pine Logs for a Bench

If you have a taste for natural design, create a one-of-a-kind seating arrangement with a natural pine bench. Constructed of sturdy pine, this bench will be durable and can be used indoors or out, making an attractive accent for any part of your home. Instructions

    • 1

Stand the log up on a chopping block. Make sure the block is level so that the log sits evenly on the block.

    • 2

Determine where you want to split the log. Set a tape measure at the top of the log and pull it across to the desired width for the bench. Position a splitting wedge over the point where you want to split the log.

    • 3

Tap the splitting wedge carefully into the log with a sledgehammer to secure it in place.

    • 4

Pull the sledgehammer up and over your head then bring it down on top of the splitting wedge. Pick the sledgehammer up and knock it into the splitting wedge repeatedly until the log splits in two.
