How to Attach Runners on a Drawer Frame

If you are building a cabinet with drawers, installing the drawer runners to the drawer frame may be a challenge. Even if the drawer and cabinet are both perfectly square, it’s often difficult to align the runners on both sides of the drawer so the drawer’s box fits the opening perfectly and the drawer opens smoothly. Reaching the tight space at the back of the cabinet to install screws to hold the frame may be a problem as well. Fortunately, many drawer runner manufacturers make slotted attachment holes in the drawer slides to allow you to make minor adjustments.

Instructions

    • 1

Attach the drawer portion of the drawer runner to the lower edge of the sides of the drawer using screws from the assembly kit. Make use of the horizontal slotted holes to help you fine tune the final placement of the drawer runner in a later step.

    • 2

Put the drawer into its opening in the cabinet. Mark the location of the drawer’s runner in relation to the side walls of the cabinet, using a carpenter’s square to help you keep the position at a right angle to the front opening of the cabinet. Set the drawer aside.

Hold the drawer slides along the top of the line you marked. Attach the drawer slides to the cabinet using the vertical slotted holes.

    • 4

Connect the drawer slides with the runners on the drawer as you put the drawer in position. Open and close the drawer. Take note of any gaps along the outside edge when the drawer is closed.

Change the position of the drawer’s runner, as necessary, by loosening the screws on the horizontal holes to straighten the drawer from side to side in the cabinet opening. Tighten the screws once you find the correct placement of the runners. Change the position of the top and bottom of the drawer’s face by loosening the screws in the vertical slots in the slides in the cabinet walls, if necessary. Tighten them once you find the correct alignment.

Put screws in all the remaining round holes in the drawer runners to set the drawer in its permanent level and straight position in the cabinet.
