How to Build a Wine Cabinet With Ikea Shelves

Simple, modular designs and relatively low prices make Ikea products prime candidates for modifying and creating new pieces of furniture, so don't feel stifled if you can't find just the piece you're looking for. If you want a wine cabinet that holds your favorite bottles as well as your stemware, for example, you're going to have to design and build it yourself. Of course, some people wouldn't have it any other way -- if that's you, then get out your tools and get ready to transform an ordinary set of shelves into a functional conversation piece.

Instructions

    • 1

Assemble an Ikea Expedit bookcase -- the two-cube-by-four-cube style -- according to the directions and set it up vertically. While you could follow these plans for a horizontally aligned Expedit, you are able to store more wine bottles if it is vertical.

    • 2

Attach an Ikea Vurm wine rack, which holds four bottles, onto the side of the Expedit using the screws that come with it. You can fit two Vurms, one on top of the other, along the tall side of the Expedit -- attach two on either side so that you can store up to 16 bottles at once.

    • 3

Screw hanging wine glass racks into the undersides of the Expedit shelves. Hanging wine glass racks hold the glasses upside down from the base, so you don't have to worry about them getting knocked over. The top shelf of the Expedit is approximately 2 inches thick, while the inside shelves are 5/8 inches thick, so use screws that aren’t too long to pierce these thicknesses.

Insert your wine bottles into the Vurm wine racks. Hang up your stemware from the hanging wine glass racks inside the Expedit. For extra style and organization, dedicate each cube of the cabinet to a different type of stemware.
