Guide for Big Hammocks

Hammocks are sleeping assemblies made by suspending large pieces of fabric between two stable supports, such as trees or opposing metal stands. Big hammocks are good for snuggling with a partner or cuddling with kids; they are available in a variety of styles and materials. Large hammocks are available at camping equipment stores, outdoor furniture retailers and commercial websites. When choosing a large hammock, consider the dimensions of the hammock bed as well as the weight it can support to ensure it meets the needs of you and your family.
  1. Mayan Hammocks

    • Mayan hammocks are among the largest varieties and are the strongest hammocks. They comfortably hold up to three people and withstand weights up to 600 pounds. Made of delicate woven nylon or cotton strings, their appearance defies their incredible strength. They are light and compact enough to be tucked into backpacks. These hammocks can be supported by hooks embedded in trees, beams or studs. Also, they can be suspended by a metal hammock stand or strung between two sturdy tree trunks.

    Brazilian Hammocks

    • Second only to Mayan hammocks in size and weight tolerance, Brazilian hammocks are made from brightly colored cotton thread that's hand woven into thick, luxurious fabric typically edged with fancy fringe. This style also holds up to three people at once and supports up to 450 pounds. They can be suspended in the same way as Mayan hammocks and are good for families with small children, as they have no strings in which limbs, toes or fingers can become entangled. The thick material of Brazilian hammocks makes them ideal for cooler climates.

    Nicaraguan Hammocks

    • Although Nicaraguan hammocks are large enough to only hold two people, they are strong enough to support 500 pounds. Their double weave of soft cotton cords is comparable to Mayan types, but they're sturdier and less likely to snag. The weight of the hammock material is medium, so it is comfortable to use in both cool and warm climates. Nicaraguan hammocks are commonly supported by metal bar stands.

    Poolside and Quilted Hammocks

    • Poolside hammocks and those made from quilted materials hold two people and can bear up to 450 pounds. Poolside styles are made from durable, quick-drying materials. They are resistant to fading and saltwater. These hammocks can be hung between two trees or suspended on a stand. Quilted hammocks resemble bedroom comforters and provide comparable comfort and warmth. They are suspendable between trees or from a hammock stand; they are free of holes or gaps, making them safe hammocks for families with small children.
